Our Defense Heritage

Our history in the defense sector dates back to World War I, when James Allison halted the company’s regular operations to manufacture equipment for the U.S. Military. This set the stage for Allison to evolve into a leading supplier for wheeled and tracked vehicles. Today, we provide transmissions to the U.S. Department of Defense for all wheeled vehicles heavier than the Humvee and more than half of the armored combat vehicles used by the U.S. Military.

Fully Customizable Propulsion Technology for Tracked Vehicles

Allison can tailor conventional, electric hybrid and fully electric propulsion solutions to meet the individual needs of our customers.

Our Defense Impact

Modernizing U.S. Defense Vehicles

Allison is playing a critical role in government programs focused on modernizing U.S. Defense vehicles.

Joint Light Tactical Vehicle

The 2500 Specialty Series™ transmission was selected for AM General’s A2 version of the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV). The JLTV is used by the U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force in addition to allied forces around the world.

Mobile Protected Firepower Program

Allison will provide the transmission for the U.S. Army’s first newly designed armored combat vehicle fielded in more than four decades. The Allison 3040 MX™ cross-drive transmission will enable MPF vehicles to move faster across difficult off-road terrain while enhancing soldier protection.

Allison Introduces eGen Force™

Building on its decades of experience with both combat vehicles and electric hybrid propulsion solutions, Allison introduced the eGen Force electric hybrid system.

Electric Hybrid Propulsion for Tracked Combat Vehicles

Developed for 50-ton tracked vehicles, the eGen Force™ meets the requirements for the U.S. Army’s Optionally Manned Fighting Vehicle program. The eGen Force is also scalable to 70-ton tracked vehicles, making it capable of meeting future Main Battle Tank requirements.

More Than A Transmission

eGen Force is a power distribution system featuring an electric motor and inverter for on-board vehicle power and parallel hybrid operation. This enables engine-off mobility to reduce enemy detection – both acoustic and thermal – ideally increasing soldier survivability.

Team Lynx

Allison Transmission is proud to partner with American Rheinmetall Vehicles (ARV) to provide the eGen Force™ for the Lynx vehicle that is in competition to be selected for the U.S. Army’s XM30 Combat Vehicle program (formerly OMFV).

The XM30 Combat Vehicle program is the priority ground modernization program for the U.S. Army that will replace nearly 3,000 Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicles. The program began with digital design phases completed in early 2023, followed by development of prototype vehicles in 2024 and government testing beginning in early 2026.

Allison Transmission joins American Rheinmetall Vehicles’ Team Lynx, which includes Textron Systems, Raytheon Technologies, L3Harris Technologies and Anduril Technologies.

Continuous Innovation

We’re advancing our portfolio of propulsion solutions and software offerings to help distribution fleets plan for the future of commercial vehicles.

Quantifiable Fuel Savings

FuelSense® 2.0 uses a unique set of software and electronic controls to deliver fuel savings of up to 6% without sacrificing the performance.
